Many Greek women were actively involved in the revolution for
independence. From the “Filiki Eteria” to Souli, the Mani peninsula and the
Mesolongi.
Laskarina Bouboulina and Manto Mavrogenous were known for their
unique contributions to the revolution. Elisabet Ypsilantis, mother of the
Ypsilantidon and “Protomana of the Filikon”.
Marigo Zarafopoula, the “spy” of the Filiki Eteria. Konstantina Zacharia who
gave the signal for the rebellion in the plains of Laconia when she was put
in charge of 500 fighters in the town of Leondari. Asimo Lidorikis, who the
French philhellenes admired as she wandered around the besieged
Acropolis with the sword of her dead husband. Euanthia Kairis, a feminist
and writer who in 1825 addressed the European philhellenic women.
Captain Domna Visvizi, who saved Odyssea Androutsos, participated in
many naval battles and gave her ship to the state to continue the fight for
independence.
